【あらすじ】

道頓堀。寒風が川面を刺すころ、飛脚問屋・河内屋は明日までに二百両を用立てねば店じまい――女将・お経の気は立ち、番頭は頼りなく、旦那・森介も追い詰められていた。

そこへ、凍えるような夜道で倒れ込んできたのが、堺の大工・常吉。三日三晩飲まず食わず、足の豆を潰しながら、別れた女房子どもを探して道頓堀まで辿り着いたという。常吉もまた“二百両”の借金を背負い、春のない冬を歩いていた。

勘違いと笑いが噛み合いながらも、店には災難が重なる。だが、最も冷え込む時こそ人の情けが灯になる。「困ったときはお互い様」――小さな助けが巡り巡って、河内屋にも常吉にも、思いがけない“福”が差し込む。春はまだ遠い。それでも、確かに春の匂いが立ち上がる人情喜劇。

Dōtonbori. As the cold wind bites across the river, the courier house Kawachiya stands on the brink: unless they raise two hundred ryō by tomorrow, the shop will be forced to close. The proprietress, Okyō, is on edge; the head clerk is unreliable; and the master, Morisuke, is cornered.

Then a man collapses in from the freezing night—Tokikichi, a carpenter from Sakai. For three days and nights he has had no food or water, his feet blistered and bleeding, after making his way to Dōtonbori in search of the wife and child he lost. Tokikichi, too, is walking through a winter without spring, burdened by a debt of “two hundred ryō.”

Misunderstandings and laughter begin to mesh, even as misfortune keeps piling up. Yet it is when the cold cuts deepest that human kindness becomes a light. “In hard times, we help one another”—small acts of compassion ripple outward, and an unexpected stroke of fortune begins to shine on both Kawachiya and Tokikichi. Spring is still far away—yet its scent rises, unmistakably, in this warm-hearted human comedy.
