Edo—Kawamachi, a nagaya (tenement row).
Next door to Genbei, a curmudgeonly umbrella mender with a reputation for keeping to himself, move a traveling carpenter, Sakichi, his wife Oyū, and their theater-loving daughter Ochie. Though the landlord warns them to “keep away,” a single line of dialogue is enough for Ochie to pry open the old man’s door. Before long, Genbei promises a solo turn of Uirō-uri (“The Medicine Peddler”), and the whole nagaya pools its crafts—hairdresser, temple-school teacher, carpenter—to form the “Nagaya Troupe,” aiming for Shiranami Yonin Otoko. The poverty of daily life and the knots in their hearts begin to dissolve into the laughter of rehearsal. As the smell of rain draws near, paper parasols bloom and the alley becomes a stage. A man who has long turned his back on the past, and a child who looks straight toward tomorrow—the light of the nagaya ties people back together once more.
