【あらすじ】

江戸の大店に奉公する娘・よね。素直で働き者のよねは、女中頭や番頭に冷たく当たられながらも、奥様の優しさを心の支えに日々を過ごしていた。

ある日、奥様の紙入れがなくなり、よねに盗みの疑いがかけられる。理不尽な仕打ちの中でも人を恨まず、相手を許そうとするよね。その姿に、奥様は亡き過去の面影を重ねていく。

やがて、よねが伊豆大島・野増で育ち、銛打ちの新兵衛という老人に育てられた娘だと知った奥様は、態度を一変させる。「親のない子は僻みが多い」「島のあんこは手癖が悪い」——あまりにも冷たい言葉に傷つくよね。

そこへ現れるのが、よねを十六年育ててきた“じっちゃま”新兵衛。島の海で生き、背中に赤子を背負いながら育てた日々を胸に、よねの名誉と愛情を守るため、大店の奥様へ真っ向から問いかける。

血でつながる親とは何か。育てるとは何か。

伊豆大島の潮の匂いと、江戸の大店に隠された過去が交差する、笑いと涙の人情芝居。

In a wealthy merchant house in Edo, a young maid named Yone works in service. Honest and hardworking, Yone endures the cold treatment of the head maid and the head clerk, finding comfort only in the kindness of the lady of the house.

One day, the lady’s purse goes missing, and Yone is falsely accused of stealing it. Even amid such injustice, Yone refuses to hate those who wronged her and instead tries to forgive them. Moved by the girl’s gentle heart, the lady begins to see in Yone the shadow of a past she has long kept buried.

When the lady learns that Yone was raised in Nomashi on Izu Ōshima by an old harpoon fisherman named Shinbei, her attitude suddenly changes. “A child without parents is bound to be resentful.” “An anko girl from the island must have sticky fingers.” These cruel words deeply wound Yone, who had looked up to the lady as though she were her own mother.

Then Shinbei, the old man who raised Yone for sixteen years, arrives. A man of the island and the sea, he once carried the infant Yone on his back while going out to fish. Now, standing before the lady of a great Edo household, he speaks from the heart to defend Yone’s honor and the love with which he raised her.

What makes a true parent? Is it blood, or is it the years spent raising a child?

With the scent of the sea from Izu Ōshima and a hidden past inside a merchant house in Edo, this is a warm human drama filled with laughter and tears.
