【あらすじ】

大正二年、梅雨の海南。野上の棕櫚、名高の傘、黒江の漆器で栄える町には、多くの旦那衆が行き交い、東浜の茶屋「初音」も連日賑わっていた。

その「初音」で評判を集める売れっ子芸者・綾女。美しく気丈に見える彼女だったが、胸の奥には誰にも言えない痛みを抱えていた。借金に縛られ、望まぬ相手から身請け話を持ちかけられる日々。そんな綾女がただ一人、心を寄せていたのが、名高の傘問屋「青木屋」の番頭・鈴木晋平だった。

毎夜のように綾女のもとへ通う鈴木。二人の想いは本物でありながら、その恋はあまりにも危うかった。金、身分、借金、そして鈴木が抱える秘密。傘では防ぎきれない雨のように、隠していた苦しみが少しずつ二人を濡らしていく。

東浜のクスノキの下で飴湯を売る与吉は、そんな二人を見つめながら、どうか不幸にならぬようにと願う。

けれど、梅雨の夜に咲いた恋は、やがて取り返しのつかない運命へと流れていく——。

海南の産業華やかなりし時代を背景に、芸者と傘問屋の番頭が辿る、哀しくも美しい恋物語。

Kainan, in the rainy season of 1913.

Prospering through the industries of shuro palm in Nogami, umbrellas in Nadaka, and lacquerware in Kuroe, the town was filled with merchants, patrons, and travelers. Among its busy streets, the teahouse Hatsune in Higashihama drew customers night after night.

At the center of Hatsune’s popularity was Ayame, a beautiful and sought-after geisha. Though she appeared strong and graceful, she carried a pain in her heart that she could tell no one. Bound by debt and pursued by an unwanted proposal of redemption from a wealthy patron, Ayame’s heart belonged to only one man: Shinpei Suzuki, the head clerk of the umbrella wholesaler Aokiya in Nadaka.

Night after night, Suzuki came to see Ayame. Their feelings were sincere, yet their love was dangerously fragile. Money, social standing, debt, and the secret Suzuki carried—like rain that no umbrella could fully keep away, the suffering they had tried to hide slowly began to soak them both.

Beneath the great camphor tree in Higashihama, Yoichi, an old vendor of ameyu, watches over the two of them and quietly prays that they will not fall into misfortune.

But the love that blooms on a rainy-season night soon begins to drift toward an irreversible fate.

Set against the vibrant industrial town of Kainan in the Taishō era, this is a sorrowful yet beautiful love story of a geisha and an umbrella wholesaler’s clerk.
