Japan, 1975. Backstage at a small traveling theater troupe.
Shigeru Takei, the troupe’s leader, was once a celebrated onnagata, a male actor specializing in female roles. His performances earned him the nickname “the Tamasaburō of Kishu.” But times have changed, and the spotlight is gradually shifting toward a younger rising star.
Proud of his craft, fiercely competitive, and too stubborn to admit his weaknesses, Takei has a sharp tongue and an even sharper temper. Yet beneath his difficult personality lies a man who loves the stage more than anything and refuses to surrender his pride as an actor.
As tensions rise with younger performers, misunderstandings divide old companions, and troubles threaten the troupe, Takei struggles against a world that no longer seems to move in his favor. Onstage, he remains as defiant as ever. Offstage, however, his bravado conceals a loneliness he cannot bring himself to share.
Before long, Takei begins to discover the feelings of those who have quietly watched over him and supported him throughout his life.
For every performer standing in the applause, there is someone supporting them from behind the scenes.
Set against the world of a traveling theater troupe in Showa-era Japan, this is a heartfelt story of an actor’s pride, stubborn determination, and the enduring bonds between people—a human drama filled with laughter and tears.
