On a certain mountain.
the proprietress of the timber wholesaler Owariya and the young master Seizaburō climb into their own hills—only to find a strange hut standing on their land. Living there are Tetsu, a man with a criminal past, and his sister Ochoko. Seizaburō has rejected every marriage proposal brought to him, but when he shyly admits he has a “type,” fate—almost like a staged scene—seems to place the perfect figure right before his eyes, and the match takes an unexpected turn.
Yet as the wedding day draws near, anxiety swells on Owariya’s side: pedigree, reputation, and appearance—those poisonous measures of “being a good fit.” Hoping the other party will withdraw, the proprietress and the head clerk devise two elaborate “performances.” But what their schemes expose instead is Ochoko’s unshakable resolve—and the weight of years she has carried in silence.
Is a person judged by looks, or by heart? By the face a household shows the world, or by the warmth it can offer within? Those who have carried the heaviest loads over the steepest paths speak with the straightest truth.
In the end, what is tested is not courage alone, but the ability to see another human being as human.
