【あらすじ】

江戸、橋のたもとの屋台蕎麦屋・善兵衛。富くじの噂に心がざわつくところへ、“一日一善”を言い出した目明し親分が現れ、さらに辻占売りの娘・お光、口八丁の女・お元が入り乱れ、橋のたもとは嘘と欲と人情で大混乱。

「財布を拾った」「当たりくじだ」——小さな嘘が雪だるま式にふくらみ、親分も善兵衛も大損害。ところが騒動の先には、十年越しの“探し人”の話が転がり込む。捕まえるべきか、見逃すべきか。情けをかければ、また騙される。けれど情けを捨てたら、江戸の夜は寒すぎる。

最後に残るのは、蕎麦でも銭でもなく——

Edo, at the foot of a bridge, soba vendor Zenbei runs his little street stall. Just as rumors of a lottery prize set his heart fluttering, a constable boss appears, preaching “one good deed a day.” Then come Omitstu, a young street fortune-teller, and Omoto, a smooth-talking woman with a silver tongue. Before long, the bridge-side turns into a whirlwind of lies, greed, and old-fashioned human kindness.

“I found a wallet.” “It’s a winning ticket.” One small lie snowballs into a full-blown mess, and both the boss and Zenbei take a costly hit. Yet beyond the commotion, a ten-year-old search for a missing person suddenly surfaces. Should they arrest someone—or let them go? Show compassion and risk being fooled again; abandon compassion and Edo’s nights turn bitterly cold.

In the end, what remains isn’t soba, and it isn’t money—only the aftertaste of what people choose to do with their hearts.
