【あらすじ】

新潟県西方沖に位置する「佐渡島」

金や銀が採取できる鉱山が豊富で、幕府直轄の領土として栄える一方で、奈良時代より流刑地として定められており、数々の罪人が「島流し」としてこの島に送られていた。浅吉もその一人で、刑期満了を翌月に控えていた。ある日、浅吉は佐渡で出会った男・秀吉に言伝を頼まれる。秀吉は胸を患っており、自分の死期を感じていたのだった。

それから一年後……

江戸の呉服問屋「近江屋」は以前のような賑わいを取り戻していた。

数年前、奉公人であった秀吉にお店のお金を盗まれてしまったことが原因で評判が地に落ちてしまったのだ。主の源兵衛が病で亡くなったりと一度は店を畳む寸前まで追い込まれていたが、女将のお勝や他の奉公人たちの頑張りにより、今では以前よりも繁盛する大店となっていたのだ。

そこへ秀吉の言伝を伝えるために浅吉がやってくる。しかし浅吉にはそれとは別にある思惑があった。

浅吉は恋人を手籠めにした男を傷つけたために島へ送られたのだが、島を出てからもその復讐の炎は消えないでいた。

復讐のためなら全てを利用するつもりでいた。そんな中近江屋の娘・おくみと出会う。初めはおくみも利用するつもりでいたが、彼女の純粋な心と優しさに、彼の心が次第に変化していく……。

Rich in gold and silver mines, it prospered as shogunate territory even as it was designated a place of exile from the Nara period onward; countless offenders were banished there as shima-nagashi. Asakichi was one of them, with only a month left on his sentence. One day, he was asked to carry a message by a man he met on Sado—Hideyoshi, who suffered from a chest illness and felt his time was near.

One year later…

The Edo draper Omiya had regained its former bustle.

Years earlier the shop’s reputation had collapsed after a clerk named Hideyoshi stole the house’s money. With the master, Genbē, dying of illness, they were once on the verge of closing. Yet thanks to the efforts of the proprietress, Okatsu, and the remaining staff, the business had grown into an even more prosperous establishment.

Asakichi arrives to deliver Hideyoshi’s message—but he also harbors another intent.

He had been sent to the island for injuring the man who violated his sweetheart, and even after his release the fire of revenge would not die out.

He was ready to use anything—and anyone—to settle the score. In that frame of mind he meets Okumi, the daughter of Omiya. At first he means to use her as well, but her pure heart and kindness begin, little by little, to change his own.
